My Approach

I often reflect on how resilient we are as human beings. Many of us go through a multitude of really tough experiences and somehow we find a way to keep functioning. At times, we ‘sort of’ function, until our coping mechanisms feel too stretched. If this is where you feel you’re at, counselling may help.

Coming to therapy and talking about your distress can stir things up at first. So the start of counselling might be about letting things settle and getting used to talking about it. We then start working on the various themes that emerge. This happens at your pace. After a while, you will notice that something lifts. Hope, possibility and a life energy appear and we will build on that.

We start by getting to know each other a little bit and clarifying together what you struggle with and what would be different if therapy is successful. The work that follows is about discovery and trying things out together. I draw from a range of possible interventions and sometimes we try something that feels unique and co-created. You will never be asked to do anything against your will.

I work with teenagers and adults who feel distressed. It could be that they have experienced something traumatic (recently or long ago). My priority is to get to know my clients in their unique circumstances, to understand what they do to protect themselves and to discover together more helpful ways to deal with challenges.

As an accredited Psychotherapist, I have worked with many forms of distress and with people from all walks of life. Additionally, I have supported students in their training, worked in the community, published research and spoken at conferences as a way to contribute to reform in mental health.

I now believe that there are many routes towards a happier, more fulfilled existence, for everyone. And here’s the paradox: once we ease off and stop fighting ourselves, we start moving in a more helpful direction. If therapy is something you'd like to try out, it would be an honour to work with you. I wish you well as you are working out what's best for you.
